Cultural and Identity blogpost – Static image

Kia ora today I will be talking about what we’ve been doing these past few weeks in WGA and what I’ve done so far. I chose to do a static image because I like to do art and it seemed fun to do! Showing some of my culture and identity was my main goal in the static image I created, I made sure to try and put as much details as I could into the image so I can get the 3 NCEA credits or to at least pass. I will further explain the details in my static image below.

This is my static image. The girl/girls is supposed to represent me, I drew  the character in my art style and how I like to dress in real life. Fashion and how I dress is really important to me, this is why I decided to do these types of clothes rather then the traditional Filipiniana to show my culture. Originally I wanted to do more traditional clothes, although mid start of my art I wasn’t enjoying it at all. So I did it “my way”. She’s wearing baggy jeans which is something I wear in real life, also a the top might be something i’d also wear. I’d say I enjoyed making this art more then what I was trying to do, forcefully creating art that I disliked.

On the pants and top, you can tell that there are “camo” looking patterns on her clothes. These are actually the Philippines and New Zealand outline that is found on the globe. You may also see the little plane about to come across from the pants to the shirt, that represents my move from Philippines to New Zealand! While looking at the pants you may also notice that there are animal silhouettes, these are some of my favourites animals ; Pandas and bunnies!

Looking at the shirt, you may notice the three stars. These stars are actually supposed to typify the three stars on the Philippine flag symbolising Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, the three biggest island groups in the Philippines.

The colouring theme on the background (different shades of blue) is representing the colour blue on our Philippines flag, the colour means peace, truth and justice. I thought it’d be a good idea to add it in since it is what I believe in. You may also notice in the background that there are music notes (I also added in headphones to my character), this is to show my love for music. Sadly I do not play musical instruments but I love listening to music, It helps me relax and focus on what i’m doing. Music has helped many people in many ways. If you looked close enough you may see “Faye” that’s my name, I added it in because my name is part of who I am / my identity.

Another thing that I decided to add onto my art is half of the Philippines sun, the sun represents liberty and its eight rays represent the first eight provinces that revolted against Spain.

At the top right corner you may see a star sign/constellation, that’s mine! I’m Libra born on 2007, October 9.

The wings on my character represent development and growth, sort of initiating that i’m able to “fly” on my own. This shows that i’ve “grown up” in my opinion.

I quote this work as “Take pride in how far you’ve come. Have faith in how far you can go. But don’t forget to enjoy the journey!”. This is because, throughout my work you may notice that it’s mostly about me and how far i’ve come and developed as a person. An example for that is the wings detail that I added or how I mentioned my style and how it changed . I’m still developing in my journey each day. But I never forget to have as much fun as I can during that journey, it’s always better to enjoy rather than being dull, nonchalant and not doing the things you want to do.

That’s all for today, thank you!

EQUIPMENT :

  • Copper coin.
  • Hydrochloric Acid
  • 100ml Sodium Hydroxide
  • Zinc Powder
  • 2M Sodium Hydroxide

INSTRUCTIONS :

  1. Clean the Copper coin with acid.
  2. Add 100mls of 2M Sodium Hydroxide to a beaker.
  3. Add 5g of Zinc Powder to the NaOH.
  4. Heat the solution to boiling.
  5. Put the coin in the solution.
  6. Using tongs lift out the coin when it turns silvery grey.
  7. Rinse the coin off into cold water.
  8. Dry the coin.
  9. Gently heat the coin above a blue flame.

RESULTS :

Discussion :

First we clean off the copper coin with acid, the acid helps to clean the coin more thoroughly. Then we added 100mls of 2M Sodium Hydroxide to a beaker, We boiled it and while doing so, our teacher added 5g of Zinc powder to the solution. We then waited for a few minutes for the solution to boil some more. After it has started to boil, we added the coin into the mix. We stirred the coin around with the solution for a couple of seconds until it turned silver/grey. We then used tongs to lift out the coin and brought it to the sink to get rinsed off. After all of that, we then dried the coin onto a piece of paper towel. Once the coin was all dried up, we took the tongs and lifted up the coin above a blue flame and “roasted” it until it turned gold.

Alloy –

An alloy is a mixture of two or more elements, as an example one of the elements that alloys contain is metal. Alloys have different assets compared to the metals that are within them. Because of these different assets, you could say that alloys are more reliable and useful than your average metal. Alloys are different in ways that make them better, as an example alloys are more dense then normal metal. This is why, in a lot of modern day objects they use alloy because of its durability, hardness and its general superiority between other metals. Alloys possess all the different assets other metals may contain. Alloy is a lot more denser, durable, stronger and more flexible than iron, and it doesn’t corrode (Rust) as quickly/easily as iron does, therefore making it better to use as building materials than iron.

Print Making Process – Blog – Art

Kia ora, in today’s blog we will be discussing the process of one of our recent activities which was print making! First thing we did was think of someone to do for the printing art, I chose to do Johnny Depp so that my last art would relate to this print making.

After we picked our person, we then printed out a picture of them. Once we’ve gotten that picture printed we got some acrylic sheet and rolled the ink onto it and covered the whole page, this is so that we can transfer the ink onto the paper later on which will make the art.

You then put the image of (chosen person) on top of the inked acrylic sheet and trace your image on top of it, make sure not to press down too hard because it may cause your art work to fail. This is called mono transferring.

After you’ve traced down every important detail of the image, you should then be taking the paper image off of the acrylic sheet. Your results should be shown by now and hopefully it turned out good.

Lamb to the Slaughter – Summary

Author : Roald Dahl

This reading text is about a husband and a wife ; Mrs Maloney and Mr Maloney. The story starts off detailing the fact that Mrs Malonely loved her husband dearly. Although her husband came home with a very nonchalant mood, he also seemed to be very quiet and less talkative. Mrs Maloney asked her husband several times if he had wanted supper since he had seemed very tired after coming home from his job, but Mr Maloney repeatedly declined her offer for some supper. This was then around the time that Mr Maloney broke the saddening news which was to divorce her, the reason of the divorcement was unexplained so we call only assume why he’d decide to divorce her ; my assumptions are that he divorced her because he needed to do something with his job that may had needed to lead them to divorcement. After he exclaimed this, he promised to keep Mrs Maloney well taken care of and also will still be receiving money from him. Mrs Maloney pretended to not hear this and went on with her day, this was when Mr Maloeny made the grave mistake of coming closer to her. Mrs Maloney was extremely angered by what he said and was still stunned at the time. So when Mr Maloney got close WHACK! Mrs Maloney hit him with the lamb leg that she was planning to cook for him, after that she went to the grocery so that she could make up an alibi for when the police got to her house ; she knew a lot about hiding evidence etc because her husband is a detective. Long story short, she pretended to be surprised and called the police. She even managed to get rid of the evidence (lamb leg) by letting the cops eat it, which was very smart of her.

What genre does this text belong to?

This text I believe belongs in mystery solving types of genre.

How does the text construct a version of reality?

It can construct a version of reality because the things that happened in the text may also be possible in real life, everything in the story can be seen in real life too. So therefore it isn’t impossible for this to happen in our world.

Dear Ex Dad – Summary

Dear Ex Dad

Author : Jullian Sullivan

In this text we learn about a father and a son through their letters to one another, during the story we learn that the father is neglectful towards his son. The son seems very weary of his father, at the start he seemed to have accepted the fact that his father is always busy and may not have time for him anymore. We could also see how busy they must’ve been with their own lives because of the time gap between the letters. Although Rikki seemed knowledgeable in knowing that his father may probably not attend his big race, he still kept his hopes up in hoping his dad had changed and he’d actually show up. In the end Rikki was left disappointed because of his fathers lack of attendance during his important race, we could tell that Rikki was very upset about this due to the fact there wasn’t another letter shown after the secretaries letter to Rikki. Perhaps intending he never wrote back to his father after that.

How’re the children, teenagers, young adults, adults constructed in this text?

The dad (adult) is portrayed as being neglectful and busy all the time, he does not have time for his son at all. The (child) is portrayed as needing more attention from his father, though the dad thinks that he lacks of knowledge in knowing how hard it is to have spare time when hes an adult, he even suggests that maybe he’d understand if he was older.

What kind of language is used in this text?

The type of language used in the text is dialogue, dialogues are typically used when two or more people are talking to one another. In this case the dad, Rikki and the secretary are talking to each other using letters.
